The landscape of the present-day game reserve of Itala still shows the scars of previous farming. It is as if the ghosts of those farmers are still present, particularly in Winter when the grass thins out and the underlying layers in the landscape are more visible. Clumps of untouched, indigenous vegetation survive between the ploughed lands, like oases in the desert.
